In order to fully utilize the Align and Distribute tools, it is important to understand the 3 buttons under the To heading. These buttons tell the other Align and Distribute buttons whether they will be aligning your items according to their grouping, the location of the first item selected, or their position on the overall page.
Note: If you are arranging multiple items (selected together by holding down the Shift key), all three buttons will be useful in their own way. If you are aligning a single item on the page, you will only need the To Page button.
This video shows the differences in aligning a row of items using the To Group, To First Item, or To Page buttons.

To Group
Selecting To Group tells the other Align and Distribute buttons that you would like the selected group of items to be oriented based on their relative location as a group, For example, if you select a group of items and then click To Group and Align Center, they will all move inward along the horizontal axis to arrange themselves in a vertical line through what was the center of the group. See examples in the video above.
To First Item
Selecting To First Item tells the other Align and Distribute buttons that you would like the selected group of items to be oriented based on the location of the first item that was selected.
Note: If you would like to designate a first item, it is best to select your group of items by holding down SHIFT and selecting individually (starting with the desired first item). The drag select option does not allow you to designate a first item, so you may not get the intended results.
This video shows that you can align a series of items according to the position of the first item selected, by using the To First Item button.

To Page
Aligning an item to the page can be helpful if you want to place something exactly at the center of the page, along one side, or in a corner. Selecting To Page tells the other Align and Distribute buttons to position the item according to the overall page. for example, if you select an item and then click To Page and Align Left, the item will move to the left edge of the page.
Note: If you want an item placed at the edge of a project, it is important to then stretch the outside edge of the item all the way through the bleed area, to ensure that your project does not arrive with a white edge.
